The British Ecological Society (BES) is an active and thriving organisation for anyone with an interest in ecology. The Academic journals, career advice and grants for ecologists are just a few of the Society’s areas of activity.

British Wildlife is the only independent magazine covering all aspects of British wildlife and its conservation. You should certainly read the copy in the library and may want to consider a subscription. For students the cost is £19.50 for 6 issues. Click on image to access site. |
The Countryside Management courses introduce aspects of species identification but if you wish to specialise the Field Studies Council (FSC) run some excellent courses at their centres throughout the UK. |
You may also consider joining the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM) which is the professional body that represents and supports professionals in the fields of ecology and environmental management. Student membership is £20 and this allows you a 50% discount on courses run by the IEEM. |
There was an excellent document put together by the Countryside Agency on the Landscape Character of England Unfortunately it is now very difficult to find on the Natural England website but most of the relevant parts are available on this site. |
For those of you with gardens there is quite a good database that has been put together by Natural England on which native plants you could grow in your garden and the fauna they might attract. |
It is great to see Natural England are spreading the word about native plants and trees in domestic gardens. If garden centres stocked more native plants, it would help hugely but many are still stocking a hgh number of foreign plants.
